In the run-up to the 1972 elections, Bob Woodward of the Washington Post reports what appears to be a minor break-in at the Democratic Party National Headquarters. He is astonished to see renowned lawyers already on the defense team, and the finding of Republican fund organizers' names and addresses on the accused heightens his suspicions. After the Post's editor runs with the story and assigns Woodward and Carl Bernstein to follow it, they discover that the trail is leading higher and higher in the Republican Party—and eventually into the White House itself.
