Zack Mayo is a reserved and uncommunicative individual with the goal of becoming a pilot for the military. When Mayo first arrives at the training camp where he will spend the next 13 weeks learning how to be an officer, he immediately runs into trouble with the harsh and unyielding drill sergeant, Emil Foley. Mayo is an outstanding cadet, but he has a tendency to keep his emotions to himself. Foley knows that the young man has the potential to become a premier officer if he can just learn to control his tendency to be so focused on himself. Zack's relationship with a female who has a job is also jeopardized since he is unable to devote of himself to the relationship.
