The story of a pro baseball team from New York and two of its players. Unlike Henry Wiggen, who is the team's great pitcher, Bruce Pearson is a regular, every-day catcher who is far from being the team's star player but is a friend to all of his colleagues. After learning that he is terminally ill during the off-season, Bruce makes the decision to have Henry, his one genuine friend, be the one person by his side for his final season with the team. Throughout the course of the season, Henry and his teammates strive to cope with Bruce's looming illness while also attempting to make Bruce's final year in the league memorable.
