Bee Season
11-year-old Eliza is the family's unsung hero: her parents are both consumed by work, and her brother is absorbed by his own adolescent life. When Eliza wins a spelling bee, she not only sparks a flame that makes her visible, but also puts in motion a change in her family dynamic. Eliza's father devotes all of his efforts to helping his daughter win the spelling bee, finding an emotional release in the power of words and the spiritual mysticism he sees at work in her unmatched ability. As a religious studies professor, he views the opportunity as not only a diversion from his daily life, but also as a means of resolving his personal faith crisis. His vicarious journey to God, real or imagined, causes him to become obsessed with Eliza's accomplishment, and he begins teaching her Kabbalah secrets. Eliza watches as each new word she forms reveals a fresh secret about her family's hidden struggle.
