Robert Stroud is sentenced to life in solitary confinement for the murder of a prison officer. In the midst of his sadness and loneliness, Stroud comes across a tiny baby sparrow in the gym's workout yard and decides to nurse it back to health. Stroud, despite having only completed the third grade, goes on to become a well-known ornithologist and finds more freedom and meaning in prison than most people do outside.
