Russia, 1936: Colonel Kotov, a revolutionary hero, is having a wonderful summer at his dacha with his young wife, Nadia, who is six years old, and other family and friends. Things change drastically when Cousin Dmitri from Moscow shows up out of the blue. He charms the women and little Nadia with his games and piano skills. But Kotov isn't fooled. This is the time of Stalin's repression, when phone calls in the middle of the night mean bad things, and Kotov knows that Dmitri isn't calling to chat.
