While growing up in a Danish town in the early 1600s, an adolescent girl named Anne develops feelings for an elderly woman, Marte, who has been convicted of witchcraft. Pastor Absalon, Anne's older but compassionate husband, saved Anne's mother, but he now refuses to aid Marte because of his overbearing mother.
