Geoffrey 'Geoff'/'Boy' Wellum joins the RAF in May 1940, believing that the RAF needs every man it can get to combat the Luftwaffe. At the age of 18, he becomes the youngest Spitfire pilot in history. Soon after, he forms strong ties with the other pilots in his unit, thanks to the rigorous training he received. Drinks, sports, and, in Geoff's case, girls (Sarah) make for great comfort on the ground when danger is present in the air. His term of service is completed after 18 months, but not before the casualties had inflicted a punishing psychological cost.
