A mother sends her children to live with their grandparents in an enormous, dilapidated estate following the loss of her husband. However, the children are concealed in a room just below the attic and are only visited by their mother, who becomes less and less concerned about them and their deteriorating health, and more concerned about herself and the inheritance she intends to reclaim from her father before he dies.
