The life of St. Francis of Assisi, who lived from 1181 to 1226, is told by followers who meet after his death to tell stories so Leone can write them down. He was a rich and virile young man, a prisoner of war, an heir who gives everything away and is a beggar for others, and an inspiration to friends who follow the Gospels' way of living. Because of his faith, he goes to the Pope and asks for his blessing. He also suffers from the family of Chiara Offreduccio (1194-1253), the woman who would become Saint Clare. Many people join the rules he has set up and then try to break them. In a state of near despair, he writes a Rule to take to the Pope. Then, the Lord gives him a message to read. He dies with a smile.
