In 1863, Newt Knight, a farmer from Mississippi, works as a doctor for the Confederate Army. Knight is against slavery, so he would rather help people who have been hurt than fight for the Union. After his nephew dies in battle, Newt goes back to Jones County to protect his family, but he is quickly labeled a deserting outlaw. When he has to run away, he hides out in the swamps with a group of slaves who have escaped. Knight leads a rebellion that would change the course of history forever. He does this by making an alliance with the slaves and other farmers.
