When Emily Walters meets local hermit Donald Horner, she is an American widow living a tranquil, unremarkable existence in London's picturesque Hampstead Village. Donald has lived in a dilapidated cottage near the forest's edge for 17 years, madly yet calmly. When Emily discovers that his home is being targeted by developers who will stop at nothing to get rid of him, she makes it her personal goal to save Donald and his land. Emily is drawn to him—as he is to her—despite his gruff attitude and courteous refusals for assistance, and what begins as a philanthropic cause turns into a romance that will grow even as the bulldozers press in.
