For many years, Fern's father was presumed dead after he went away as a child in Montana. An anonymous letter from Dr. Green, who tells her that her father is alive and living in Los Angeles, piqued her interest in going to hunt for him. Together, they went out to discover Fern's father in the decrepit parts of the city, while developing an interest in each other that was not entirely platonic at first.
