Hirosuke (Teruo Yoshida), a medical student with little or no memory of his background, finds himself locked in an asylum despite the fact that he is fully normal. In the course of his escape from the psychiatric ward and subsequent framing for the murder of a circus girl, he comes across a photograph of a recently deceased man, Genzaburo Komoda, to whom he has an uncanny likeness and decides to pursue the case. Hirosuke adopts the role of the deceased by pretending to be resurrected, fooling everyone, including Komoda's widow and mistress. While staying at the Komoda household, Hirosuke recalls memories that lead him to decide to journey to a nearby island, where he would meet Jogoro, Genzaburo's web-fingered father. While on the island, Hirosuke finds not only Jogoro's aspirations to create his 'ideal community' (by changing perfectly normal persons into grotesque monsters), but also the horrifying truth about his own identity.
