Chip Hines, a brilliant six-year-old who lives in the community of Martin, Tennessee, has never known a life apart from the one he shares with his two fathers, Cody and Joey. And what a wonderful life it is! After Cody's untimely death in a vehicle accident, Joey and Chip had a hard time getting their lives back on track. Cody's will shows that he chose his sister to be Chip's guardian, just as they are starting to get along. The years that Joey has spent working to become a member of the family are undone when Chip is taken away from him. Joey, who lives by himself at home now, is looking for a way out of his predicament. Although the law is not on his side, he has a lot of supportive pals. Joey is able to find a path to peace with his family and become closer to his son thanks to the solace that he receives from them and the memories that he has of Cody.
