Ivan the Terrible, Part II: The Boyars' Plot

Sergei Eisenstein was commissioned by Soviet leader Josef Stalin to make a three-part epic biopic of Russian Czar Ivan Grozny, which is now under production. This is the second installment of the epic biopic. Due to producer dissatisfaction with Eisenstein's introduction of forbidden experimental filming techniques into the material, which was more evident in the third part than the first, the epic was halted before the third part could be filmed. It was as a result of the deaths of Eisenstein and Stalin, as well as a shift in attitude on the part of the Soviet leadership, that this second half was not allowed to be shown until after their deaths. As Ivan the Terrible strives to solidify his power by organizing a personal army, his political opponents, the Russian boyars, plot to assassinate him in this chapter.
