When Kit Kittredge's father loses his business and has to travel to find work, the Great Depression has a direct impact on her life. Kit is nine years old at the time. In the very first "American Girl" theatrical film, Abigail Breslin, who was nominated for an Oscar, starred as Kit and leads an outstanding cast. Kit and her mother need to take in boarders, sometimes known as paying house guests, in order to keep their home. These guests, who turn out to have a lot of great stories to tell, pay for their stay.
