Andrzej and Krystyna, husband and wife, nearly run over a young hitchhiker on their way to an afternoon on the lake. Andrzej invites the young man onto the boat with them and begins to torment him subtly; the hitchhiker responds by making overtures toward Krystyna. When a hitchhiker is accidentally thrown overboard, the husband's panic has unintended consequences. This was Roman Polanski's first feature film.
