Because of succession disputes, King Henry VIII's death throws his kingdom into disarray. Edward, his frail son, is on his deathbed. In order to keep England true to the Reformation, scheming minister John Dudley marries off his son, Guildford, to Lady Jane Grey, whom he places on the throne after Edward dies. Guildford and Jane, who were initially hostile to each other, fall in love. They, however, are unable to withstand the course of power that will lead to their ultimate demise.
