With the assistance of his friend and manager, Jane, and their entourage, Jonas Nightengale makes a career as a phony Christian faith healer, traveling over America hosting revival meetings and performing'miracles.' An accident occurs when one of their trucks breaks down in Rustwater, a community that is desperate for rain to salvage its crops. While awaiting the arrival of spare components, Jonas plans to arrange a revival meeting in the local community center. Sheriff Will Braverman is wary and does everything he can to keep his town and its inhabitants from being taken advantage of by scam artists. Boyd, a local crippled youngster, feels that Jonas has the ability to restore his ability to walk. The events of Rustwater force Jonas to evaluate his own religious beliefs and uncertainties.
