Longtime Companion
Longtime Companion chronicles the lives of a small group of friends since the first mention of the condition in the New York Times in 1981. The sickness, first referred to as "Gay-Related-Immune-Disorder," has a devastating impact on the lives of our heroes. Vignettes shift between Manhattan and Fire Island, taking us from the "it-couldn't-happen-to-me" thinking of the early days of the disease to the invasive effect it has had on all of our lives, today. The film's title was inspired by the New York Times' refusal to mention homosexual relationships in its obituaries section at the time. "Longtime Companions" of the deceased were instead used to refer to the deceased's relatives and friends.
