Lost in White is set in northern China, where two victims are discovered beneath the ice of a frozen lake, their remains rendered unidentifiable by predatory fish but yet bearing the mark of having been dragged with an ice hook. Captain Zhou (Tony Leung Ka Fai) is in charge of the inquiry, a determined cop who is dragging along his adolescent daughter Xinyi (Zhou Dongyu). He is soon joined by Wang Hao (Tong Dawei), a young Shanghai investigator who is investigating a missing person case that has brought him to the same village as the murders. The two instances are connected: the missing person and the two victims were both members of a quartet of businesspeople who constructed a refinery in the region 10 years ago and disposed of chemical waste in an unethical manner, poisoning the waters and resulting in malformed infants over the next decade. Is the missing businessman the assassin, the next victim, or a ruse?
