Ellie King, recently widowed, visits her brother Aaron Davis and his children for Christmas while still grieving the death of her husband and daughter. Ellie makes new acquaintances with Mrs. Thompson, a local shopkeeper, and attractive admirer Deputy Strode. Ellie meets Erik, a young man abandoned by his outlaw father whom Aaron has taken in as one of his own. When Aaron goes out of town to buy agricultural land, Ellie agrees to keep his kids, but Aaron goes missing.
