Pretty Melinda Howard has been singing with a group of musicians abroad. She decides to go back home to surprise her mother, whom she thinks is a famous Broadway star with a mansion in Manhattan. She has no idea that her mother is a burned-out cabaret singer who loves whiskey. When she gets to the mansion, the two servants who work there are friends of her mother and take her in. The house belongs to a kind-hearted Broadway producer named Adolph Hubbell, who also gets caught up in the charade. Hubbell likes Melinda and decides to put her in his next show. Melinda also finds love with a handsome hoofer who is also in the show. Melinda's life is going well, except that she wants to see her mother, but her mother keeps putting off seeing her.
