Ivan Bibic returns to his Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, suburb after escaping a Japanese POW camp, which has been the source of regular nightmares for him. Throughout it all, he stayed committed to his boyhood sweetheart, fellow ethnic Yugoslavian virgin Maria Bosic, whom he had known since childhood. She goes on another date with him, so jeopardizing her virtual engagement to captain Al Griselli. They decide to marry over the counsel of Ivan's father. However, Ivan has become psychologically impotent, believes he is unworthy of her, and begins to wonder, even hunting for another woman. During this time, a suave guitar and song-busker named Clarence Butts relocates to South-Western Pennsylvania and seduces Maria.
