The events of "Marius" take place at the La Marine Bar, which César and his son Marius own and operate in the Old Port of Marseilles. The fulfillment of Marius's greatest ambition is to leave on an adventure to a distant location aboard one of the boats that passes by his father's tavern. Since she was a child, Fanny, a young and lovely seafood seller, has been secretly in love with Marius; Marius, who has never admitted it, has always adored Fanny. One day, a sailor walks up to La Marine's bar and makes him an offer to work on an exploration ship. Fanny tells Marius that she loves him in an effort to distract him and to make him envious. At the same time, she provokes a fight between Marius and one of César's old friends, Panisse, a boat merchant, who, despite his advanced age, has been courting Fanny for some time. Fanny's confession of her love for Marius causes the fight. Marius puts up his desire to be with Fanny, who gives herself to him, since he is torn between the allure of the sea and his love for her. Marius has a change of heart as César and Honorine, Fanny's mother, are getting ready for the wedding. He finds himself being drawn back to the call of the sea.
