Mary Stuart, the widow of King Francis I of France, traveled back to Scotland in 1561 to reclaim the throne that was rightfully hers. Because she also had a valid claim to the throne of England, her return posed a threat to the reign of Queen Elizabeth I of England, who was the current monarch of England at the time. Both queens are in danger as a result of betrayals, rebellions, plots, and the choices they make in their own lives.
