Alice and David Chaplin, together with their children, relocate to a gated luxury housing development where social standing is everything. The snooty standard is set by Queen Bee Ffion, who addresses her daughter in French even in stores, and Alice is concerned by the parents' competition to get their children into the trendy Chelsea college rather than the despised local comprehensive school. To be closer to the action, Sarah McDonald takes a job as a school secretary. Molly, Alice's daughter, is clearly not an intellectual, getting a meager 38% on her dummy run entry exam for Chelsea. Alice, fearful about her daughter's future as a prostitute, decides to impersonate Molly and take the exam herself.
