Having suffered a heart attack in New York, Abbie Polin (Crystal), a New York doctor, travels to Los Angeles to visit his father, Abe (King), who is known in Hollywood as "the king of the extras." For some years, their relationship had been strained. This was Henry Winkler's debut picture as a director, and it was filmed in part at the MGM Studios in Culver City, California, which is only a few miles away from the famous Hollywood Walk of Fame. Lisa, Abbie's romantic interest, also pays Abbie a visit and forms a bond with Abe, who is well-liked by everyone save his son, despite their differences. Abe begins to experience memory loss, and it is later determined that he has a brain aneurysm. As time passes, he and his son grow closer, and Abbie attempts to secure Abe a speaking role in a film before it is too late for him.
