John Rollins, a family man farmer, is worried about his financial situation: crows and lack of irrigation are destroying his corn crop; his mortgage is about to be paid off; he doesn't have credit to repair the water pump or buy seeds; and his marriage is in trouble, with his wife Mary giving too much attention to her friend Tommy. When John unintentionally discovers a terrifying scarecrow in a hidden chamber in the barn, his son Michael makes him pledge to remove it. However, his next-door friend Jude Weatherby pays him a visit, gives him a six-pack of beer, and persuades him to install the scarecrow in the cornfield. The crows die, the pump starts irrigating the area again, and the banker responsible for the closure suffers an accident and dies. However, he believes that something bad has taken possession of his farm and is endangering his cherished family.
