Claudin, the pit violinist, is desperately in love with rising operatic soprano Christine Dubois (as are baritone Anatole and police officer Raoul) and discreetly helps her career. However, Claudin loses his touch and his career, murders a rogue music publisher in a fit of rage, and has his face acid-etched. Soon after, unexplained crimes begin to plague the Paris Opera House, which are attributed to a fabled "phantom."
