Hattie (Susan Sarandon), a New Orleans prostitute, meets Bellocq (Keith Carradine), a photographer, in her brothel one night; after he pictures her, he befriends Violet, her 12-year-old daughter (Brooke Shields). Violet quickly loses her innocence and becomes preoccupied with reconciling with Bellocq after her mother's madam employs her as a working girl and Hattie leaves town to get married. When Violet's mother returns to town, however, her relationship with Bellocq is jeopardized.
