In the admissions office of Columbia University School of the Arts, Louise Harrington (Linney) is 39 years old and divorced. Anxious to meet her high school sweetheart's application, she calls F. Scott Feinstadt to set up an interview. Alike in look, demeanor, and painting style, she suspects the young artist is her ex-lover. Soon after meeting, they begin an affair. Louise's life is also complicated by her ex-husband Peter's struggle with a sex addiction that plagued their marriage; her ne'er-do-well brother Sammy, who is favored by their mother Ellie despite his flaws; and her best friend Missy, who stole the original Scott from Louise before his death and seems intent on doing the same with the contemporary version.
