The life of someone close to King Charles II is saved by Robert Merivel, who was an aspiring young physician who found himself in the service of the monarchy and the service of the King. Merivel becomes a member of the King's court and enjoys the affluent lifestyle that is afforded to someone in his position. Merivel is commanded to marry the mistress of his King in order to divert the queen's attention away from him. The monarch only gives him one order, and that is not to fall in love with anyone. When Merivel discovers that he has fallen in love with his new wife, the situation becomes even more dire.
