Japan's greatest fencer, Takezo, has returned to Kyoto after years on the road building his reputation as the country's best. Otsu is waiting for him, but he has not come to see her; rather, he has come to challenge the head of the region's most prestigious fencing school. In order to demonstrate his bravery and expertise, he purposely walks into ambushes set up by the school's followers. While Otsu is waiting, Akemi is also on the lookout for him, expressing her desires straight to him. Meanwhile, Sasaki Kojiro, a great young fighter who is confident in his ability to dethrone Takezo, is keeping an eye on him. Takezo proclaims his love for Otsu after triumphantly departing Kyoto, but he does so in a manner that is both dishonorable to her and shameful to himself. He departs on his own accord once more.
