A year and a half after his divorce from his model wife, psychotherapist Larry Livingstone is ready to take on a new endeavor. The young widow Beth, with two children, becomes the object of his affections. In the meantime, though, Beth and the children are still in mourning over the deaths of their husband and father, and Larry finds it difficult to break through their defenses. For his part, Larry has to deal with his ex-wife, as well as his feelings for his own children, who are both adopted. Beth and the children gradually come to the realization that they must move on with their lives and that they have been given a second opportunity at life.
