The story of Lelia, a light-skinned black lady, and Tony, a white guy, who fall in love in New York City, is told in John Cassavetes' directorial debut. When Tony meets Lelia's darker-skinned jazz singer brother, Hugh, and realizes that her racial ancestry is not what he believed it to be, the relationship is jeopardized and their relationship is jeopardized. Shadows is a piercing work that is often regarded as the progenitor of the American independent film movement. It was shot on location in Manhattan with a cast and crew that was primarily comprised of nonprofessionals.
