After his parents divorced a year ago, ten-year-old Jared Marshall's world disintegrated. Not only does his father prioritize his career, but his mother uproots him from Iowa to accept a job in California. When Jared's class writes letters to US troops in Bosnia from the nearest base, kindhearted Sergeant First Class Vince Carerra, who grew up fatherless and divorced due to his wife's infidelity while he was on tour of duty, takes an interest in the child and begins a correspondence with 'fatherly' advice. Vince pays a visit to Jared's house upon his unit's return to Fort Sebastian. He is greeted warmly. Vince becomes Jared's personal baseball instructor and, with the assistance of Cupid, his mother's boyfriend, but only on the condition that he not commit because he is likely to be redeployed.
