The liberation of Nelson Mandela and Spud Milton's first year at an elite boys-only private boarding school are just around the corner. After winning a scholarship to study in Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa, John Milton, a young man from an average family, finds himself in an elite private school there for the first time. The lads in Spud's new home have nicknames like Gecko, Rambo, Rain Man, and Mad Dog, so he has his work cut out for him trying to fit in. There, Spud makes his first steps toward manhood. There's a good chance this route may take quite some time. Spud is the only child in the family. An elderly grandmother and insane parents have left him with little else to do. His father, an anti-communist zealot, is certain that the family's domestic help is running a shebeen out of a rear bedroom.
