Finney Shaw, a 13-year-old boy who is reserved yet bright, is kidnapped by a vicious killer and held captive in a soundproof cellar where he is unable to be heard crying for help. Finney realizes that he is able to hear the voices of the killer's prior victims when a wall-mounted phone that has been disconnected begins to ring. They are dead-set on preventing Finney from experiencing the same things that befell them and are doing everything in their power to achieve this goal.
