Just before World War II, Veronika and Boris meet in Moscow and begin a relationship. The two of them are walking along the river when they notice cranes flying overhead and agree to meet up before Boris leaves to battle. Boris is absent from the meeting and is on his way to the front lines, while Veronika waits patiently and sends letters on a regular basis. After her home is bombed, Veronika moves in with Boris' family, where she finds herself in the company of a relative who has his own agenda.
