Hugo Archibald is a doctor who brings home a wide variety of exotic animal species. The most recent animal he has brought home is a chimp named Jennie. Dr. Archibald is rarely at home, and Andrew suspects he does not care about him. And Lea, his wife, dislikes Jennie and claims she is a nuisance. The children, on the other hand, take an instant liking to her. Jennie is one-of-a-kind in that she is learning to use and comprehend sign language. Jennie becomes an important member of the Archibald family, and Andrew Archibald, Dr. Archibald's son, develops a close relationship with her. Jennie enjoys the same activities as Andrew, such as baseball and comic books. When Andrew and his father disagree, Jennie is there for him. Pamela Prentiss, a doctor, begins her training with Jennie. She objects to the way Jennie is being cared for and is perceived as being impolite to the Archibalds.
