Mark Watney, an astronaut who was participating in a manned trip to Mars, is assumed dead following a violent storm, and his crew abandons him. Watney, however, has made it through the ordeal unscathed, and now he finds himself abandoned and defenseless on the dangerous planet. Because he has only a few limited resources, he will have to rely on his inventiveness, intelligence, and spirit in order to survive and discover a way to let Earth know that he is still alive.
