Nick Hart is a struggling American artist who lives among the expatriate community in Paris in the 1920s. He spends most of his time drinking and socializing in local cafes and badgering gallery owner Libby Valentin to sell his paintings. He gets involved in a plan by wealthy art collector Nathalie de Ville to fake three paintings. This leads to several run-ins with American rubber magnate Bertram Stone, who is married to Hart's ex-wife Rachel.
