Mr. Miyagi has a chance encounter with the widow of his commanding officer while attending a ceremony honoring Japanese soldiers who served in the United States Army during World War II. He gets to know her granddaughter Julie, an angry adolescent who is still reeling from the agony of having lost both of her parents in an accident and is having issues with both her grandmother and the other students at her school.
