A young girl experiences a miraculous transformation that takes her into a world filled with gingerbread soldiers and an army of mice. In the enchanted version of the holiday tale The Nutcracker that Disney has created, Clara is looking for a special key that will allow her to open a chest that contains an irreplaceable present. A golden thread that was given to her at her godfather's holiday party directs her to the sought key, which then vanishes into a mysterious and otherworldly parallel universe. There, Clara comes face to face with a soldier, a band of mice, and the rulers of three different enchanted realms.
