Caroline and Lloyd are a married pair who are continuously at one other's necks, masters at creating acid-tongued jabs at the cost of the other. Indeed, they are so concerned with insulting one another that they refuse to stop, even when threatened with a pistol. The gunman is Gus, a criminal on the run from the police who kidnaps the couple as an insurance policy with the intention of using their home as a hideout. However, their constant arguing proves to be more than Gus bargained for, causing him to take on the unpleasant task of mediating for the sake of his own sanity. To make matters worse for Gus, he realizes that he has taken the couple prisoner on the night of their huge Christmas party, and that the guests are already on their way. Gus decides to attend the party in order not to leave Lloyd and Caroline alone, and he poses as the couple's marriage counselor. As the hostage crisis and marital tensions reach their inevitable end, this naturally results in a series of comical misunderstandings.
