The Reluctant Astronaut
Roy Fleming, portrayed by Don Knotts, is a kiddie-ride operator in a small town who has a morbid fear of heights. Roy grudgingly travels to Houston after discovering that his father had enrolled him in the space program, only to discover that he will be working as a janitor and not as an astronaut. Roy manages to maintain the appearance of an astronaut in front of his family and friends in order to live up to his authoritarian father's expectations. Roy is given the opportunity to face his phobias when NASA chooses to fly an untrained individual into orbit to show the viability of a new autonomous spaceship.
