Tom leases a modest and remote lakehouse in search of peace and quiet. The lakehouse is marked by a local legend about a woman who, after drowning, haunts the surrounding woods and drowns everyone who comes into contact with her. Tom's new neighbor, Al, who is mourning the recent death of his husband, is particularly intrigued by this idea. Tom and Al's relationship, which began as a pleasant one, gradually deteriorates when the former becomes friends with a mysterious woman named Nina, about whom Al has strong unfavorable feelings.
