'Neal MacGregor' was an English artist who died alone and prematurely at the age of 44 on a lonely island, in an unfinished stone hen-house that he couldn't stand up in and where he had no running water, power, or heating. It was during his eight years on the island that the Gaelic-speaking islanders were increasingly unaware of Neal's presence. This Stranger had no name. Was he, as several islanders suspected, a British spy recording IRA gun-running routes? Was he attempting to seize command of the island? He seemed to be going insane, as some people suspected. Or was he simply looking for solitude? He left behind volumes of beautifully illustrated notebooks and secret diaries, and this beautiful enigmatic film brings the jigsaw puzzle of missing pieces together and sensitively paints a portrait of a man who was living on the edge, both physically and mentally, and the insular island community in which he was a part of.
